Our Story

Watford Surveyors — Born & Built in Hertfordshire

We started Watford Surveyors because we saw a gap in the market. Too many buyers in Watford were getting generic, formulaic surveys from national firms that didn't know the area.

We're different. Our surveyors grew up in and around Hertfordshire. We know which post-war estates in north Watford tend to have issues with concrete block construction. We know which Victorian terraces in Oxhey suffer from bridged damp courses. We know the commercial property market in Watford town centre inside out.

James Thornton

Founding Principal Surveyor

James founded Watford Surveyors after more than a decade working for national surveying practices. He grew up in south Watford and studied Building Surveying at the University of Westminster before qualifying as a chartered surveyor. He now leads the practice's residential surveying division and is known for being particularly thorough on older and larger properties across Hertfordshire and the home counties. Outside work, James coaches junior football in Bushey and is passionate about Watford FC.

Sarah joined Watford Surveyors six years ago, bringing with her extensive experience in residential property surveys across Hertfordshire and north London. She studied at Oxford Brookes University and trained with a well-regarded practice in central London before returning to her home county. Sarah specialises in leasehold properties, new builds and Help to Buy assessments. Clients consistently praise her for being approachable, patient and excellent at explaining complex issues in a way that makes sense.

David has over 20 years of experience in building and commercial property surveys across Hertfordshire, north London and the wider south east. He has surveyed everything from Grade II listed farmhouses to modern commercial units in Watford's business parks. David is the team's go-to expert for older or larger properties and complex structural assessments. He is a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Building and brings a meticulous, no-stone-unturned approach to every inspection he carries out.
